Old Testament Monks and Nuns

The Nazirite vow was a way for both men and women to dedicate themselves to the Lord. It was like becoming an Old Testament monk or nun.

When we get to the Book of Judges, we’ll find out that Samson was a Nazirite (a terrible one, since he is constantly touching dead bodies, fooling around with foreign women, and drinking alcohol at his wedding, but at least he didn’t cut his hair….).

The Nazirite vow was another way for Israelites to live into their calling to be a “kingdom of priests” (Exodus 19:6).
