Commencement Speaker

Tomorrow (Saturday), I’m giving the commencement address at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky.

I’ll actually be speaking twice, due to the number of graduates and the size of the venue.

10:00 AM Eastern - Commencement for Graduate Students

2:00 PM Eastern - Commencement for Postgraduate Students

Both ceremonies will be livestreamed here.

I’m really honored to be here and grateful to Asbury’s new president, the Rev. Dr. David Watson, for the opportunity to address the graduates. ATS is a special place, and American Christianity (and, in fact, global Christianity) has greatly benefited from the Holy Spirit’s work through ATS over the years.

It’s a quick trip—flew in today and fly out tomorrow. Fingers crossed I make all my flights and get back to Tulsa late tomorrow evening. If not, I’ll be calling in and preaching from my cell phone Sunday morning….

P.S. As the photo below shows, the ATS folks had Mountain Dew Zero waiting for me in my hotel room. I think my assistant Sandie must have been a co-conspirator. Nothing like a nice cool MDZ to getcha goin’.

P.P.S. I didn’t grow up around the Great Lakes. Flying into Chicago never ceases to amaze me—that’s a lake?!

P.P.P.S. Horse country! Pretty sure this is Churchill Downs, right?

P.P.P.P.S. That’s a joke. Churchill Downs is in England, I think. Or one of the Carolinas? I never can remember.

P.P.P.P.P.S. Asbury Church—my church in Tulsa—and Asbury Theological Seminary—in Wilmore, Kentucky—are separate institutions, but we’re both named after the same man, the great early American missionary to the frontier, Francis Asbury. These days, Asbury Church hosts an extension site of ATS on our property in Tulsa, but we are still separate institutions. Just thought I’d clear up any confusion. Also, I’m testing to see if you, dear reader, have actually read this far.
